Knowledge AttributionFloods in the rainy season have been the most frequent, destructive and prevalent disaster. As a result, the fields in Gobargada are loaded with the sediments every year and becoming less fertile. In addition to that, villagers do not have the practice of preserving the vegetables for the flooding season. Therefore, the villagers grow their own vegetables for the rainy season only, since floods make it difficult to visit the nearby town to get vegetables or food.
DescriptionEvery year villagers plant the suitable vegetables prior to the rainy season, using their knowledge and experiences acquired over generations. The priority is given to the vegetables that can resist flood and serve them throughout the rainy season. They opt for the suitable plants that cannot die in water and be harvested in a short time. The vegetables that are grown in the village are mostly vines/climbers such as pointed gourd (parwal), bottle gourd (lauka), oal (Elephant yam), tossa jute (Patuwa) and taro (karkala), that aren’t easily damaged by the water. The traditional approach taught them that vine plants don’t get damaged easily as they aren’t completely submerged in water.
