Trikhandi or Krating is a traditional method of flood management used in many parts of South Asia, including Bangladesh. It involves the construction of small earthen embankments in agricultural fields. The embankments are constructed in a triangular shape, with the base of the triangle facing the direction of the floodwaters. When the floodwaters arrive, they are diverted towards the apex of the triangle and then back into the main channel of the river. River desilting, on the other hand, involves removing sediment and silt deposits from the riverbed and banks. By removing these deposits, the river's capacity is increased, reducing the risk of flooding.

Description

The Flood water gets spread all around the village due to the lesser riverbed depth as a result of silt deposition. Both, Trikhandi or Krating and river desilting is considered effective in reducing flood damage in areas such as floodplains in Bangladesh. Trikhandi or Krating help to reduce the force of floodwaters and protect crops from damage. Meanwhile, river desilting can help to increase the depth of the river and reduce the risk of flooding in the surrounding areas. The villagers can even use deposited silt to prepare bricks and other types of products, with the help of the government support.
